Gotta Get This Off of My Chest…

I am very upset by the recent legislature changes regarding abortion and the legalization of infanticide.  I used to be an OB-GYN nurse, and I’m so glad now that I am not doing that anymore.  I will not have to worry about abandoning my patients because of my personal beliefs on abortion.

I USED to be very pro-choice.  I believed in total unrestricted access to this procedure, that it is a woman’s private decision, and that government had no part of that.  I am now 99% Pro-Life and 1% Pro-Choice.  The pro-choice part stems from a belief that a woman should be allowed to have an abortion in the case of rape, incest, and unlimited up until the heart begins to beat.  The pro-life part comes from a firm belief in not allowing abortion to be repeatedly used as a form of birth control.  Additionally, if the woman waits too long to make the decision, then she should have to bear the child.  She can place him/her up for adoption, if desired.  There are MANY potential parents out there who would love to have that unwanted child.  I also believe, along with a lot of other people, that once a heart starts to beat, there is life.  Who are we, as humans, to question the value of life?

This whole idea of post-natal abortion (aka:  infanticide) is anathema to me as a nurse and as a human being.  As nurses, we are DUTY-BOUND to not harm our patients.  Isn’t infanticide just that?  I will not stand by idly and not be heard on this, and I know that I’m joining a growing number of people who feel the same way.

If I was still working in OB-GYN, I would have to quit my job and find another field of nursing.  There is absolutely NO WAY that I will EVER participate in this heinous practice that was passed in NY, approached in VA, and now being seriously considered in IL.  BTW, with the bill pending in IL, a caregiver could be PROSECUTED for refusing to take part in infanticide.  This goes against the grain of humanity, let alone nursing!  What kind of society kills its newborns?  I would refuse the assignment, and quit my job — no ands, ifs, ors, or buts there.

I am deeply saddened by the political climate perpetrated by liberals in this country, and the direction that we are heading.  I, for one, will NOT BE SILENT!!

Please do not use my site for medical advice. This blog is the opinion of the author, and any medical concerns that you may have should be followed up with your doctor. I have been an RN since 1986. My experience includes Adult Med-Surg, Adult Medical ICU, step-down, pediatrics, Labor & Delivery/Post Partum, Visiting Nurse (community health), rehabilitation, detox, and school nursing. My undergraduate degree is from Boston University. I have a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in paralegal studies from Duquesne University, and am currently studying at Slippery Rock University for the Certified School Nurse program. Once I complete that, I will continue on in grad school for a MPH or a dual MPH/MSN (haven't decided yet). My professional goal is to work as a nurse in a school setting and to utilize my public health education to improve the health of students. Currently, I work as a Health Service Nurse in Pittsburgh, PA -- which I love! I am a mom, grandmom, wife, Conservative, and Constitutionalist. I have 3 grown kids, two grandkids, and several fur-babies. I have very eclectic tastes: I am a true bibliophile, love antiquing, flea markets, concerts, comicons, kick-boxing, playing cards, and spending time with my family.
